Questions
How many commercial building permits does Seattle issue?
About 25 non-residential permits a week. After repairs, re-roofs and very small jobs are taken out, 13 commercial build-outs were permitted between Oct 1 to Oct 12, 2026.
What is a tenant improvement permit?
A permit to build out or change the inside of a commercial space for a tenant: new walls, electrical, data cabling, plumbing and finishes. It is usually issued weeks or months before the business opens, which is why it is an early sign of new work for signs, cabling, security and AV.
Why is the tenant sometimes not named?
The permit only names the tenant when the applicant writes it in the description. The city record always shows the applicant, often the architect, contractor or permit service running the project.
Where does this data come from?
From the City of Seattle's public building permit data (Department of Construction and Inspections). Siftdata reads every new permit, leaves out repairs and small jobs, and tags each project by the trades it is likely to need. Siftdata is independent and not endorsed by the City of Seattle.
